Drones across Spain are detecting unreliable solar panels and wind turbines.
- Spain’s largest utility company backs launch of survey on wind farms.
- Investments are more about understanding the technology than making profits.
Drones the size of manhole covers are helping Spain’s largest utility cut the costs of green electricity by spotting faulty solar panels and wind turbine blades far ahead of engineers on the ground.
Iberdrola’s 500,000 euro ($586,000) investment in drone maker Arborea Intellbird SL is not only helping the company better understand how technology is reshaping the energy industry, it is also demonstrating a new venture capital model for Europe’s largest utilities.
